Old Stodůlky: Discovering History, Art, and Quiet Corners of the Countryside

30. 7. 2025

When people hear “Stodůlky,” most think of the panel housing estates of Jihozápadní Město. Yet right in the heart of this modern development, the original historic village center has been preserved. Today, it forms a village conservation area – one of only two in all of Prague.

The walk begins at Junkových Square and leads past the metro station to a small lake with a bronze sculpture of a Rusalka (water nymph) by Kurt Gebauer. From there, we continue along Kovářova Street to the Church of St. James the Greater, originally built in the Romanesque style. Just behind the church is the Bublák fountain, created by Milan Vácha. From the fountain, we head toward the source of the Prokopský Stream, which goes on to form water features in the Central Park.

Along the way, you can observe many old farmhouses and dwellings. You might come across a late Baroque gate or a farmhouse with a sundial. Although some parts have suffered from insensitive renovations, the overall character of the area still retains its village atmosphere.
