Homolka and the Pacold Lime Kiln: Exploring the History of Limestone Quarries and a Geological Site

6. 8. 2025

Not far from Barrandov lies the geologically significant site of Homolka. This former limestone quarry and rock outcrop is a fossil site containing bivalves and trilobites, and since 1989 it has served as the global stratotype for the boundary between the Lochkovian and Pragian stages.

Around the rocky slopes, many valuable plant species grow, such as Wallis fescue and dwarf sedge.

When you descend from Homolka, a bit further on you’ll come across the Pacold lime kiln. It processed limestone using a patented design by Jiří Pacold, who simplified the lime production process so that the limestone didn’t need to be laboriously sorted. The two shaft furnaces were loaded from the top and had draw-off openings near the ground.

The kiln operated until the beginning of World War II and then fell into disrepair. Between 2024 and 2025, it was renovated and has since become a point of interest for architecture and industrial heritage experts.

Unfortunately, it’s no longer possible to get all the way to the kiln, but even a view through the fence offers a rewarding experience.

The return path follows the road for a while – so be cautious of passing vehicles. You’ll then climb stairs through an allotment garden, leading you past family houses and across the street back home.
