Výlet: Holyně

A Walk Through Holyně and to the Dobrá Voda Spring

16. 10. 2025

Just a few steps from Barrandov lies the Holyně district of Prague. This former village hides several interesting landmarks, charming playgrounds, and a pleasant atmosphere.

From Olgy Scheinpflugové Square, we’ll first head to the former Chapel of St. John the Baptist. This pseudo-Romanesque chapel was built in 1861 by a local farmer, Marie Magdalena Malá. The reason was a storm during which lightning struck her wagon on a country road, and everyone miraculously survived unharmed. The event happened on St. John’s Day, June 24.

Inside, there used to be a small altar, but it hasn’t been preserved. In the 20th century, the chapel was deconsecrated. The founder’s descendants, who took care of it for decades, were forced to hand over the keys in 1948, and the chapel lost its original religious function.

The building then fell into disrepair until it underwent a complete reconstruction in 2007. Since 2008, it has served as a gallery and a venue for cultural events. It is open from April to October on weekends and public holidays between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.

From the chapel, we continue to the end of U Smolnic Street, where a small showcase chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands. It was built in 2009 by Mr. Miroslav Vocílka at his own expense and was inspired by the Chapel of St. John the Baptist.

From here, we turn right, leaving the paved path behind and starting a small adventure through nature. The trail leads us to the Dobrá Voda spring, where you’ll find a nice seating area – perfect for a quiet break or a snack surrounded by greenery.

From the spring, we pass under a railway bridge and gradually make our way back home.
