Samo’s Realm

This lecture, part of the Milestones of Czech History series, will focus on the first known union of Slavic tribes, which arose from resistance against the Avars in the 620s. You will learn about the mysterious merchant Samo, how he became the leader of the Slavs, and why his short-lived realm became a milestone in our history. The talk will also touch on the famous yet still enigmatic Battle of Wogastisburg, one of the most important clashes on Czech soil, despite the many uncertainties surrounding it. The event also pays tribute to historian Jan P. Kučera (1948–2025). The lecture will be delivered by Jakub Rychtar.
