Life and Death of Prince Wenceslas: Between Legend and Reality

  • Prague 5
  • Flats Kaskády Barrandov
  • Barrandov

Come and learn what we really know about Prince Wenceslas, who became the eternal patron of the Czech lands.

The lecture will present Wenceslas as a historical member of the Přemyslid dynasty and as a saint whose image has been shaped for centuries by legends, tradition, and church veneration.

You will hear about Wenceslas’s possible everyday life and style of rule, his political aims, and how his vision of government differed from that of his brother Boleslav. The talk will also address the murder in Stará Boleslav, what our sources actually tell us about it, and how a ruler was transformed into a symbolic “eternal sovereign” of the Czech nation. The lecture is part of Jakub Rychtar’s series Milestones of Czech History.

When: 20 April 2026 | 5:00 pm
