Behind the Scenes of Election Campaigns – during Emperor Franz Joseph I's Reign(Wednesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m., Na Bělidle 252/34, 3rd floor)
Elections are one of the most important acts of democracy, when the visions of the people are meant to be reflected in the composition of representative bodies and governments. At the same time, they are also a power struggle among politicians. The first parliamentary elections in the Czech lands took place almost two centuries ago, and much has changed since then, both in content and in the form of election campaigns. This lecture will introduce you to the phenomenon of parliamentary elections during the reign of Franz Joseph I and present the key election battles that took place in our country at that time.
Behind the Scenes of Election Campaigns – in Interwar Czechoslovakia(Wednesday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m., Na Bělidle 252/34, 3rd floor)
This lecture reveals what parliamentary elections looked like in interwar Czechoslovakia during the First Republic. Thanks to detailed archival research, we have managed to uncover documents that were intended to remain hidden from voters. How did these discoveries change the perception of elections? How did they take place? And what strategies did the actors fighting for dominance over society adopt? We will show the advantages and disadvantages of the electoral system of the time, methods of manipulating public opinion, as well as the violence and corruption that did not spare the election battles of that era.
