Genesis of the Přemyslid Principality: The Rise of a Single Ruling Dynasty
How did the Přemyslid principality emerge from a fragmented landscape of smaller lordships?
The lecture will focus on a period we know only partially – scattered written references and archaeological evidence are complemented by historical hypotheses and reconstructions. Together, we will explore whether several smaller power centres existed in Bohemia, how their unification may have taken place, and why the dominance of the Přemyslid dynasty became firmly established so quickly.
The talk will also touch on the Přemyslids’ rivals, the political, economic, and ecclesiastical pillars that supported their rise, and the key scholarly works and authors historians rely on when studying this era. The lecture is part of Jakub Rychtar’s series Milestones of Czech History, dedicated to Great Moravia and the beginnings of the Přemyslid age.
