Decline of Great Moravia and the Shift of Power to Bohemia
How did Great Moravia collapse, and why did the political centre of gravity in Central Europe begin to move towards Bohemia?
The lecture will explore the background of the Magyar raids, the weakening of the Moravian realm, and the changing political landscape of the region. It will also focus on the early Bohemian rulers, about whom our sources are both silent and revealing, as well as on the spread of Christianity in Bohemia.
You will learn what archaeological finds and written records tell us today about the end of Great Moravia, how the Přemyslids built on this legacy, and why this period is crucial for understanding the origins of the Czech state. The lecture is part of Jakub Rychtar’s series Milestones of Czech History.
