Cyril and Methodius Mission in Great Moravia

  • Prague 5
  • Flats Kaskády Barrandov
  • Barrandov

Come and revisit the arrival of the Thessalonian brothers in Great Moravia and the period when the foundations of Czech statehood and literacy were being formed.

The lecture will explain why Prince Rastislav invited Constantine and Methodius, what role their mission played in the politics of the empire, and why the use of the Slavic language in the liturgy was so groundbreaking.

You will learn how the Glagolitic script was created, which texts were translated into Old Church Slavonic, and how the legacy of Cyril and Methodius influenced later centuries. The lecture is part of Jakub Rychtar’s series Milestones of Czech History, which this term focuses on Great Moravia and the early Přemyslid period.
