We don’t get to choose our childhood. But together, we can give it a better chance. At FINEP, we have long supported foster and kinship care because we believe every child should have the opportunity to grow up safe and know they have the support of those closest to them.
Childhood Isn’t a Waiting Room for Better Times
Helping matters. And if we had to point to one place where help is needed most, it’s children who weren’t lucky enough to be born into a safe and loving family.
At FINEP, we believe helping a child isn’t a one-off gesture. It’s an investment in the future of our entire society. A child who gains a stable home has a better chance of a dignified adulthood—and a life free from debt, addiction, or crime.
When a Child Lacks a Stable Home, We All Pay the Price
In the Czech Republic today, around 28,000 children cannot grow up with their parents. About 21,000 of them live in some form of alternative family care—most often with foster parents. Around 7,000 children still grow up in institutional care.
Long-term, unaddressed trauma, emotional deprivation, and a lack of security can shape a person’s entire life. It’s not only about mental health—it also means a higher risk of leaving school early, falling into debt, addiction, or criminal activity.
A family isn’t “the better option.” It’s the foundation. A child needs acceptance, stability, and a lasting bond—things that institutional care often cannot replace.
What Is Alternative Family Care?
When a mother and father can’t provide care, foster parents step in. Alternative family care takes several forms. Most commonly, it includes:
Adoption
A permanent placement of a child into a family, with all the rights and responsibilities that come with it.
Foster Care
It can be long-term or temporary and often allows the child to stay in contact with their biological family.
Foster parents are crucial for children—especially those who are willing and able to take in siblings, older children, or children with disabilities.
Dobrá rodina: Support Along the Way
Dobrá rodina o.p.s. is the largest support organisation of its kind in the Czech Republic. It operates in all regions and supports more than 1,500 foster and adoptive families.
It helps substitute parents navigate everyday situations, challenging periods, and long-term issues. It supports them professionally, personally, and systematically—so that children can grow up in safety and stability.
Dobrá rodina is also a pioneer of temporary foster care—cases where a child needs immediate safety while their long-term future is being determined.
Dobrá rodina connects what’s essential for success:
- children who need a stable home
- substitute parents who need support
- professionals and a system that must work reliably
Dobrá rodina offers, for example:
counselling and support in caring for a child
collaboration with specialists
training, workshops, and seminars
audiobooks and self-study materials
campaigns and awareness-raising around foster care
care for at-risk children
Why FINEP Supports Dobrá rodina
We started out with the confidence that we were doing the right thing. Over time, we realised something even more important: supporting children is one of the best investments in the future.
Our partnership is built on three pillars:
Long-term partnership
For Dobrá rodina, we are a stable, reliable partner they can count on. Thanks to that, they can make confident decisions, knowing they can rely on us.
Sharing our know-how and experience
We’ve been involved in ways beyond financial support. We help Dobrá rodina grow into an even stronger leader in its field – leveraging our managerial skills and experience from various other areas to elevate its operations to the next level.
A shared goal
A stable childhood for as many children as possible. Because when children thrive, society thrives too.
